Education System in the Czech Republic

The education system in the Czech Republic is divided into three levels:

          •

          primary education (age of 6–14)

          •

secondary education (age of 15–17, 18 or 19)

          •

tertiary education (age of 19 or higher)

The primary (elementary) education is compulsory for all pupils, it is provided by a wide network of primary

schools and it takes nine years in total (5 years at the primary stage and 4 years at the lower secondary stage).

The compulsory school attendance may be preceded by preschool education (age of 3–6), which is provided

          for by nursery schools.

Upper secondary education builds on the primary education. This is provided by secondary schools and can

be divided into basic secondary education (1–2 years), secondary education with a vocational certificate

(2–3 years) and secondary education with a school-leaving examination (usually 4 years).

Those who have passed the school-leaving examination can further deepen their knowledge and skills

in various fields at universities or colleges, representing tertiary education.

Environmental Education in the Czech Republic

Environmental education, training and awareness (EETA) originates from the English word „environment“.

Therefore, the education is aimed at responsible management of the environment. EETA is supposed

to provide the pupils and students with appropriate knowledge, skills and motivation to this end. Some-

times, designations such as Environmental Education, Green Education, Eco Education or Environmental

Pedagogy are used instead of EETA.

EETA is an integral part of education at all school levels, i.e. from primary schools to universities. Some

of the topics of environmental education concern even pre-school children.
